Identity is the gateway to the modern enterprise. It decides who is let in and who is kept out, which is exactly why it is now the primary attack vector in security. Yet most companies still cannot say who has access to their systems at any given moment. The tools meant to govern identity were built for a slower world of human users and static environments. The explosion of human, machine, and AI-agent identities has outpaced them, and the incumbents' answer, bolting AI onto twenty-year-old platforms, has not closed the gap.

The market has reached a breaking point. We built Oak to be what comes next: not a better version of the old stack, but the platform the industry has needed for twenty years and could never build until now.

AI is rewriting the identity problem

The identity stack was built for a world of human users, static environments, and quarterly change. That world was already straining. AI is breaking it, on three fronts at once.

A new identity class. AI agents authenticate, hold credentials, and act on the enterprise's behalf, and in most organizations they already outnumber the humans. IAM was never built for them: no owner, no lifecycle, no review.

Before we wrote a line of code, we spent months with more than 100 CISOs and IAM leaders. The environments differed. The failures didn't, and every one of them gets worse under those three shifts. Every tool keeps its own list, so there is no single source of truth to reason from. Governance is rule-based and periodic, so a quarterly review tells you what happened, never what's happening. Service accounts, out-of-band entitlements, homegrown apps that were never onboarded, and agent behavior fall through the cracks between tools. And when a risk is finally visible, there is no path to fix it beyond a ticket and a wait.

None of the three shifts is solvable without one complete picture: every human, machine, and AI agent in a single live graph, with the context to act on it. The legacy stack can't produce that picture. It isn't slow to adapt; it simply can't. A leopard can't change its spots. The market knows it: Gartner predicts that 70% of CISOs will adopt identity visibility and intelligence capabilities by 2028. Backed at inception

We've spent our careers on this problem. Between us, we've founded and sold three security companies (Integrity-Project to NVIDIA's Mellanox, Secdo to Palo Alto Networks, and Ermetic to Tenable, where Shai then served as CPO), led product at Tenable, and built enterprise platforms at Salesforce. Identity kept showing up as the problem everyone knew was broken and no one had managed to fix.
